“This is some freak-funk, alt-electro right here. Blast it in honkey-tonk dives and haunted houses alike.”

“strutting electro-funk”

About the EP
Never easy to categorize, Birds & Batteries continue to cut their own
path of genre-less music. Previously revered by some as alt-country
garage, fuzzy synth psych, or electronic pop, Birds & Batteries again
find themselves in new territory with their latest EP, Up To No Good.
Songwriter Mike Sempert describes it as "a spooky-funky adventure."
Heavily influenced by Bowie’s Scary Monsters, P-Funk, and John
Carpenter films, the EP manages to convey a degree of mystery/magic
amidst post-modern wreckage, combining the fun of late ’70s freak-funk
with a detached, studio cool of ’80s R&B. And all just in time for
Halloween (cue Vincent Price).

Heart of Gold
Jungles (Oceans)
I’ll Never Sleep Again
I'm not tired
I'm alive
And I'm wondrin'
How to stay that way
'Cause I was young once
I could be young again
I'll cast out in a small boat
With a wooden fin
And I'll never sleep again
I'll stay up all night
Just to stay alive
I could take a late walk
Through sunken countrysides
Past the old docks
Past the harbor lights
Under rusty fishing boats
Rock through the night
I'll never sleep again
No, I'll never sleep again
A Passenger
When I'm haunted
By the ghost of me
I think I see him in our towns and cities
And in our jungles
In a war of vines
The world against itself
We could drag a steam boat
right through the trees
and never sleep again
Oh… Here comes the mud
And it's filling our houses
A rooftop is a vessel
And a man is just a passenger
A room is a vessel now
And a man is just a vessel
Ocarina
A song will help us reconstruct the time we had
The ocarina, it's never let me down
And when the world goes under water, swamps will rise
Stay with me
We feel the water in our sinking shoes
It's under water now, and into the night we go with everyone
Give me a song to remember the world by
Play it on
The Ocarina
And late at night we used to sneak around the aquarium
The shark tank gives a half-light, and you're next to me
The sadness of polar bears and the ecstasy
Of breaking and entering, oceanography
Ocarina
Ocarina
You're like a summer, a never-ending summer when the best days are long
You're like a summer, a never-ending summer when the best days are long
There was a summer that came before the fall
After A Flood
Take off your shoes and lay them next to mine
They've carried you far enough
I'll get you yours and then I'll get me mine
We've been walking through the mud one at a time
Take all the leaves and bring them in the house
And in the hall so we can see
Soaked through, they'll stick to the hardwood floor
I think they belong with you and me
Take off your shoes and lay them next to mine
They've carried you far enough
Down in the mines you have strived alone
We're gonna shine the diamond in the rough
Star Clusters
Stars cannot harbor their substance forever
But must return a portion of it to the medium from which they formed
Stars cannot harbor their substance forever
but must return a portion of it to the space around them
Stars that were born together stay together for a while
in associations known as star clusters
Out there in the open
Where the big things happen slowly
I can feel it coming towards me
I'm like a skater in a crack the whip
Turnstyles
Graduation was bleak, and I was drunk enough to speak
So I offered you a haircut: your mohawk was looking sad enough
You said you liked it that way
We shrugged it off, we said ok
I'm finding out, every time, that I shine a brand new dime
Or when I go through the turnstiles and the tokens cycle back again
The tokens cycle back again
They carrty cakes in boxes, those slippery old foxes
Sliding under fences and running into rainy intersections
And dodging yellow traffic, the drivers blinded by red flashes
And I'm thinking about your haircut, wishing I had some tattoos
Maybe then you'd let me cut your hair while whistling the blues
I've covered up all the bases and I've left all stones well turned
And I've built expensive bridges just to let them all get burned
And now the bandits and the farmers will have to wait their turn
You're mine for the taking, and the tokens cycle back again
The tokens cycle back again
The Squeaky Wheel
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
Make a sound while you toil
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
And when you're down on your luck—and rusty
Well nobody's gonna give a fuck—just let me know
You just have to let me know
The squeaky wheel says so
And when you're down on your knees
And you're aiming to please
Make a sound for me baby
The squeaky wheel…
Yes make a sound just for me
Make a sound and then you'l see
It's the only way I know
How to give you my sympathy
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
To the victor, the spoils
The squeaky wheel gets the oil
And when you're down in the hush
Of a jungle, green and lush
You can hear the mating call
The squeaky wheel gets it all
Soft Surveillance
In the lakes and in the canyons
All the states wrapped into one
All those shapes like origami
Colorado, Oregon
All the wash could be remembered
The soft surveillance of laundry loads
And every mile that passes under
The lowest highways and country roads
And all the fires of industry
The things we had forgotten
Well they're coming back to me
Running down the dunes
Blazing trails through Appalachia
All the trucks of Tokyo
And all my blue jeans are dying
Telecasts from Mexico
New glory days are here again
They bring me back to something
That I felt once in a dream
Running down the dunes
And tumbling towards the sea
In the lakes and in the canyons
Years of footage down the drain—and a curse of metal
Sinking down to the bottom
Where it lives forever in our hearts
Humanization
Humanization, oh yeah, humanization
Humanization, that's what we need
Now tell me a story about a nation
With numbers and families, you better round down
Walking home on a map
Just walking home on a map
Satellites could track our footsteps
Pixels and grains of sand
Soon enough the stuff of life will be precisely contained
Every leaf
Its every gesture
Sealed and filed away
There is a code
Coincidence holds the truth inside itself
Atlantic blue and digital pictures
We'll bring us back somehow
Deep in the hall of records
The documents and documenters
Press record
It will all be stored
Sealed and filed away
Mythology, The Great Director
In the land of the landslides, flash floods and valleys of stars
People are drinking in alleys and kissing in bars
We wear suits sewn with gold lace, brass straps and nylon guitars
And it's good to be a mariachi, we work hard
Five wives and a hundred lifetimes
And a Mexico-goldrush-execution
Federales will always win
But the bandits will choose to get shot with their hats on
You fought in the second world war and you quake at the memory
Of one one-armed salute
As you wade on to certain death
Using celluloid to capture flesh
The great director
Your father and you
Well you're the best of friends, and Humphrey Bogart too
Old collaborators
Drinking whiskey with cast and crew
Discovering women who become icons
There's monkeys in your hotel room
They've strewn shit about but you keep them around
You've got eyes that light up around horses
And you lead the hunt every time
You have proven yourself as a boxer
But you always wanted to be a great painter
As long as you've got a song in your heart
All your cameras could fall apart
As long as you've got a song in your heart

Code Orange
For amber waves of radio
An orange tinted tv glows
Its orange like an oil field fire
Leaving clouds of black ribbons
The warm jets fly
Orange like the flashing lights
Orange when you close your eyes
And face the sun
Orange like the blush of shame
For things they'll do in our name
And I'm afraid of the price we'll pay
Orange like that bloody day
And orange like the flashing lights
Orange when you close your eyes
And face the sun
For amber waves of radio (and all that's fit, and all that's fit)
An orange tinted tv glows (and all that's fit, and all that's fit)
Orange like an oil field fire (and all that's fit, that's fit to print)
Orange when you close your eyes
Face the sun
Face the sun
Face the sun
Face the sun
TV Commercials
TV commercials make me wanna cry like a baby longing for something long gone
Cause I can't go back to embryonic catatonia, I'll have to settle for my easy chair
Life's ambition, purpose and passion. It handles like a dream with power steering
TV commercials, you know they changed my life
and I'll feel better just to know that such happiness exists
Cause I wanna be so completely new, like a baby
and the blank screens stare back at me
A wife and family, gorgeous memories. And all you ever needed was a camera. (uh-huh)
Machines That Dream
The hum of sleep.
Machines that dream
Of remedies. Of remedies
They'll work in whispers
They're crossing wires
And they're moving numbers
They're gonna make it better
Versions of me
In units of story
Are streaming through the database
They'll work in whispers
They're crossing wires
And they're moving numbers
They're gonna make it better
Smoking the Filter
Am I still your favorite?
Has your affinity up and quit?
I'm down to the filter and I'm sick of it
Now tell me: who's your favorite?
If I could roll this whole affair
into one small bone-like cigarette
I'd say we've burned down the best of it
And I'm just smoking the filter
Outside of some smoke-free bar
We can talk and talk about it
How those dirty ghosts have broken in,
And how our house is haunted
Now I may have tried to protect myself
From the sparkling tar and black chemicals
But when you get down and you burn down to it
Its still pretty ugly
Shouldn't have lied to you
I shouldn't have filtered everything through
Shouldn't have lied
And I'll smoke a pack a day
Then I'll change my brand
Most of my life I've changed my name.
And I do it for you (that's right)
Outside is our place to talk
But we're just staring down at the side-walk
And I've run out of ways to win
So I'm smoking the filter
Last call could last forever
There's no way that this is it
But last call seems like now or never
Baby, who's your favorite?
Gloria
Pack my bags and hit the road (gloria)
When I've found my peace of mind
I will know where I'm going
And where to go
There's some things I gotta know (gloria)
Some small mystery
When its dark outside
There's a light in your eyes
Where'd it come from?
Where's it go?
You've got a funny way of talking (gloria)
And I like the way you talk
Whats gotten into you?
Whats this stuff that sparkles through like birds?
Now there's some things I'll never know (gloria)
And I like it that way
When I have given up
figuring out a sunny day
Pack my bags and hit the road (gloria)
When I've found my peace of mind
I will know where I'm going
And where to go.
Toothache
When I get a toothache
Its like a slow alarm clock
Stretched out on a string of nerves
And I have to pull it out.
My smile is like a ghost town
And I'm a weary sailor
So sleep-deprived from out at sea
But I'm never going home
So everybody that I ever met
I better forget about
Everybody that I ever met
I better forget about you.
No novacaine can fill a hole
Just makes numb again old doubts
When a wolf is caught in a snapped trap
There's only one way out
And for every stuck piece of me
Another surgery
The ghost leg of an amputee is howling
And I better forget about you
If the occasional shark attack
Or raging scurvy
Should make you worry baby,
Don't look back
Teeth and limbs are just collateral
For open seas
And its the sailors life for me
The Goodbye Lullaby
It feels good out on a limb
Even if the bow may break
You'll get good at falling in and out of bed
Like falling in and out of love
And you can try to remember old friends
But they'll pass right through your hands
Like they pass through the halls of your life
And fade like ghosts, like photographs
You were once my good boy. You were once my good boy
You were once my good boy. You were once my good boy
Runaway Family
I've got a wife and kid
I watch over them
We drive from town to town
Leave in the dead of night.
(sleep, sleep, sleep, darling.)
And I'm like a shephard now, I watch over them
We drive from town to town, leave in the dead of night
Together on the run, cause I'm like a shephard now
Leave in the dead of night, drive through the dead of night
(sleep, sleep, sleep, darling.)
We are just a runaway family. We are just a runaway family
When I was just a man, I'd ride the train to work
I'd catch her looking, everyday I fall in love
I wanna tell her so, I just want her to know
And then I'll say goodbye, leave in the dead of night
We are just a runaway family. We are just a runaway family.
We are just a runaway family. Now, we are just a runaway family.
La La la-La La
Albuquerque (Neil Young)
Well they say that Sant Fe is less than 90 miles away
And I've got time to roll a number and rent a car
Oh… Albuquerque
And been flying down the road. And I've been starving to be alone
Independent from the scene that I've known
Oh… Albuquerque
Albuquerque
Vietnam Movies
When we go to the rainy day matinee. (ahh…)
They will show old vietnam movies. (ahh…)
And when the water falls through holes in the ceiling. (ahh…)
We will all get soaked to the bone. (ahh…)
Fire Escapism
Don't you get lonely America?
Don't you get tired and blue?
Let me satisfy you
Dim down all the lights in the movie house
Come now, come away.
We'll make things right
Cause when we were younger,
I kidnapped you
I was a kid then too.
And I kidnapped you
I was in my pajamas on the fire escape
Black rings around my eyes
I heard you singing
"The road I'm on has got the slightest bend
And I've been travelling so long. Since I don't know when."
Don't you get lonely America?
A circle is strong and true
And its pulling you
Come in from the rain, dim down the lights
Highways will be untangled some other night
Then in the sixties and seventies
Even the tv news could hypnotize you
Thats just nature versus nature
Come and go
Black rings around my eyes
I heard you singing.
Summersalts
Winter salts are not at all like summer salts
Scattered out on icy roads to aid the thaw
They can spin you out so slow, you'll feel like you're standing still
When the other side comes around, you'll wonder where its been
But with the turning tide
Comes the summer time
You get the spins
Summer salts are jostly and shake with joy and fear
Summer salts can hustle you and fill you up with beer
And that must be why
In the summer time
You get the spins.
Afternoons and lazy dogs
We'll sleep on baking roads
The heat rolls off and the trucks go by (count 'em: 1-2-3-4)
In the summer time
In the summer time
You get the spins
(In an accident on a summer highway, our car just skids and rolls
And it seemed like we were standing still, just spinning out so slow
Then the other side comes around and shows you how it feels
There are seasons inside seasons and we are full of wheels.)
